A heartwarming, family-friendly movie – RUNT – has been chosen for the day, and there’s plenty of popcorn to enjoy and goodie bags full of bubbly fun to take home.

Grandparents Day has been celebrated in the Northern Territory since 2021 by COTA NT with the support of the Northern Territory Government. This year, NT Grandparents Day falls on Sunday 27 October. COTA NT has four movie mornings on the day itself available to grandies, in Darwin, Palmerston, Alice Springs and Katherine, thanks to event partners, BCC Cinemas Casuarina, Event Cinemas Palmerston, Alice Springs Cinema and Katherine Cinema 3.

Last year, hundreds of grandies enjoyed the Grandparents Day movie screenings, which were a very cool way to spend a hot morning. Last year Ninja Turtles were the stars, this year it’s an adorable little dog.

Based on Craig Silvey’s beloved best-selling novel, RUNT is the heartfelt and hilarious tale of eleven-year-old Annie Shearer and her best friend Runt, an adopted stray dog with remarkable abilities. In a bid to save their family farm, the two aspire to compete in the Agility Course Championships at the prestigious Krumpets Dog Show in London, whilst overcoming hurdles, obstacles and nefarious villains.

“I love that the movie features a Shearer family,” laughed Sue Shearer, CEO of COTA NT, “but honestly, no relations there. It does look like a terrific movie though, so I’ll be taking my little grandies along so we can hang out together. I have my Seniors Card all ready for a discounted post-movie treat too.

“I encourage all grandparents and older carers to enjoy their special day with their families – at our movie mornings, or simply by sharing their favourite activities. I should keep the contents of our goodie bags secret, but they do include a very useful Grandparents Toolkit – full of everything we need to know, from where to access financial support to how to make playdough.

“Grandparents and Carers can also check the Grandparents Day website to find out what supports and services are available to them, especially if they are providing regular childcare and financial support for their grandchildren.”
