SANE Australia
A national mental health charity making a real difference in the lives of people affected by complex mental health issues through support, research and advocacy.
More than thirty years on from deinstitutionalisation, Australians affected by complex mental health issues still experience unacceptably high levels of stigma and discrimination.
While there are increased services for young people, adult Australians face major barriers in getting affordable access to the quality clinical and psychosocial support services that can support their recovery and enable them to lead a better life.
As a result, people affected by complex mental health issues can die up to 30 years earlier than their fellow Australians. These barriers also have a direct impact on those who support a family member, friend or colleague with a complex mental health issue – emotionally, socially and financially.
This is unacceptable and we are committed to changing this reality for the five million Australians affected by complex mental health issues. This includes people who are currently living with a complex mental health issues, have an experience of complex trauma or are experiencing high levels of psychological distress, and a further four million who are family, friends or carers. Complex mental health issues include schizophrenia spectrum disorders, bipolar and related disorders, obsessive-compulsive and related disorders, personality disorders, trauma-related disorders, eating disorders, and severe depression and anxiety.
