ACT Disability, Aged and Carer Advocacy Service

An independent, not-for-profit, advocacy organisation helping people with disabilities, older people and their carers.

ACT Disability, Aged and Carer Advocacy Service (ADACAS) provides free advocacy and information to people in Canberra and on the South Coast of NSW living with disability, experiencing mental ill-health, older persons and their carers. We are an independent human rights organisation. We believe that all people have an equal right to enjoy their human rights.

We provide support to help applicants access the National Redress Scheme and to individuals who are making a submission to the Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability.

Through our Systemic Advocacy we seek to influence Territory and National policies and service delivery to improve the lives of the people we work with.

We develop tools to help people help themselves such as the Supported Decision Making toolkit and provide inclusion training for people working with people with disability within a human rights framework. We also offer Plain English translations.

ADACAS advocates work with individuals and groups of people to achieve changes that will promote, protect and defend their human rights. We seek outcomes that enhance our clients’ rights and dignity, and empower our clients to:

  • be heard in the decisions that affect their lives

  • understand and exercise their rights

  • have control over their lives.
