Ageing at the Centre: Putting Elders and Older People at the Heart of Our Work

The report details the principles of engagement, co-design, and partnership underpinning the planning and delivery of the AAG and ATSIAAG’s two-day forum, Ageing at the Centre: Putting Elders and Older People at the Heart of Our Work, held in Mparntwe Alice Springs in 2024.

This event aimed to foster trusted collaborations between non-Aboriginal and Aboriginal aged care providers in the Northern Territory, addressing the growing need for culturally safe and flexible services in the region.

The forum brought together diverse stakeholders, including service providers, Aboriginal and mainstream organisations, researchers, and policymakers, to share knowledge and build partnerships.

Recognising gaps in expertise and community connections among non-Aboriginal services entering Aboriginal aged care, the event facilitated meaningful collaboration to address the complex needs of local communities.

AAG leveraged its national networks to select a culturally appropriate location, reflecting its ongoing commitment to Aboriginal ageing.

Despite media reports highlighting crime and safety concerns in Mparntwe, local partners supported proceeding with the planned location.

This choice underscores AAG’s dedication to long-term advocacy for older Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, going beyond one-off engagements to strengthen knowledge and action in this critical area.
