Why adult children taking over the family home is a form of abuse

It's a common plight often joked about: the adult child still lives with mum and dad, but they just won't move out.

Sadly, it's not a joke anymore for thousands of older Australians who are at their wit's end trying to reclaim their own home back. Some are even forced into homelessness - despite owning their home outright.

"My son has taken over my house; I'm living in my shed and peeing in a bucket" is one of the more extreme cases heard by Legal Aid NSW's Elder Abuse Service.

"I worry about leaving my sons and how they will care for themselves, but I also worry about my health and my sons continuing to abuse me," is another.
