Remote community pilot has a powerful ‘ripple effect’

A pilot project that partners advocates with local aged care ‘champions’ is already paying dividends for older people living in remote areas.

Since Darwin Community Legal Service (DCLS), one of OPAN’s 9 network members, teamed up with the Arnhem Land Progress Aboriginal Corporation (ALPA) in June 2024, the advocacy organisation has received 14 separate referrals and self-referrals from older people in Ramingining and Milingimbi, 2 communities situated 560 kilometres east of Darwin.

‘By working at a grassroots level, we can build the rapport we need to run this program in an effective way.’ DCLS advocate Ramnik said. ‘It’s having a ripple effect’
