Bureau of Infrastructure and Transport research shows that while people 60 and over represented 27 per cent of road deaths, the pedestrian death figures were much worse.
Now the Australian Catholic University has received $820,000 funding from the Australian Automobile Association to develop a tailored online training program to enhance pedestrian safety among older people.
It will aim to enhance hazard perception skills and reduce the risk of harm.
The first of its kind in Australia, the program will use 3D simulations and gamification alongside physical and cognitive training to help older people respond safely to traffic-related threats while walking.
The program, which will be designed over two years, will be easy to navigate and accommodate varying levels of digital literacy. It will also support users with potential sensory or cognitive impairments.
