So called ‘once in a generation’ changes will come into force in July, 2025 following the passing of the Aged Care Act on November 25th.
There will be a new regulatory model, strengthened Aged Care Quality Standards, and a Statement of Rights for older people. The reforms came about in large part because of the horrors and neglect revealed by the Aged Care Quality and Safety Royal Commission.
For nursing homes, the bill imposes a means-tested resident fee of just over $100 a day for the purposes of funding food and other amenities.
Three in ten full pensioners and three in four part pensioners will be paying more for their care. The bill also provides for the injection of $4.3 billion into an in-home care support system that will allow older people to stay in their homes for longer. OWN has serious concerns about the inadequacy of the new Act in protecting the rights of older people to safe, affordable care and will continue to lobby for changes.
The Department of Health and Aged Care have announced that the Star Ratings system is getting a refresh as part of the reforms commencing under the Act. COTA Australia is inviting all older Australians to share their views on the Star Ratings system. The more feedback and participants involved, the more accurate and helpful the Star Ratings system can become for everyone.
