Fellowships for seniors help combat elder abuse

ABC News online reports that Dr Catherine Barrett, CEO of Celebrate Ageing, is sending older Australians "back to school" to help combat the increase in financial abuse which she says is happening, in part, because cost of living pressures. She says some children or parents resume living with each other to make ends meet, and this can lead to financial abuse.

Dr Barrett runs a not-for-profit called Celebrate Ageing which aims to change the narrative around ageing and empower elderly Australians to stand up for their rights. In the report she said she was well aware of the increased cost-of-living pressures on elderly Australians.

"That's a real flash point for abuse," Dr Barrett said.

Celebrating Ageing's fellowship program boasts six fellows and three current students working across a number of fields, including combating ageism.

Dr Barrett said such work was pivotal to empowering the community to take a stand against elder abuse.

"We've got to actually send the message to the whole community that disrespect for older people is not OK," she said.

"But also to older people, to say that they are worthy of respect and that to take a stand is incredibly important."
