Recognising the signs of elder abuse

Research shows when it comes to elder abuse, older women are most at risk. Worse, it’s often a family member who inflicts the abuse.

Latest statistics from the NSW Ageing and Disability Commission indicate 77 per cent of the almost 3000 reports it received in 2020 about people who were subject to, or at risk of, abuse, neglect and exploitation related to older people, most of whom were women.

Elder Abuse - Your family and your home

Legal Aid NSW

In this webinar we speak with a senior solicitor and social worker from the Legal Aid NSW Elder Abuse Service about elder abuse that can occur in the family and home. It's not uncommon for older people to find themselves sharing their home with an adult child. To fit with the Seniors Festival 2021 theme, 'In our Nature', we will explore emerging legal themes and challenges, particularly when an older person is sharing their home with an adult child and how community and support workers can help.

After years of discrimination, many LGBTQ people are 'terrified' of going into aged care

Following our recent webinar, LGTQIA65+: Equality for All, this ABC News article references one of our contributors, Claire Allen from ACON.

Key points:

  • The Royal Commission into Aged Care did not make any specific recommendations for the LGBTQIA+ community.

  • Advocates say residential care can be particularly frightening for the community, who have grown up with discrimination.

  • Volunteer visitor programs are trying to combat social isolation experienced by elderly members of the community.
